The X-Dome™ 2 is an ultralight freestanding tent developed from our focus on efficient design to be more spacious, protective, and simple to use. It combines our weight efficient and simple X-Mid floorplan with a structurally optimized pole set to provide unprecedented space and protection for the weight. The result is a generously sized and fully freestanding two person shelter that is highly livable in tough conditions for just 2.7lbs (1.25 kg).
The X-Dome 2 is a generous sized, true two person shelter that is noticeably more spacious than comparable tents. That spaciousness starts with the floor, which has a width of 52" (130 cm) for the full length so it can easily accommodate two wide pads. The floor length is suited for taller hikers with an 88" (224 cm) length that is made more useable by the near vertical end walls.
What really makes the X-Dome 2 spacious though is the taller interior height combined with a shape that preserves that height over more of the tent. The interior height of 43" (1.1 m) is 3 - 6" taller than comparable tents and the full length crossbar extends this peak height over to the doorways (creating vertical sidewalls) while the geometry extends the height towards the ends (creating near vertical end walls). The result is 20 - 40% more volume than comparable tents including outstanding headroom and shoulder room - allowing partners on two wide pads to comfortably share the tent.
The dual vestibules are also generously sized at 9 sq ft (0.83 sq m) each. Each vestibule can easily fit a large pack while having extra room for cooking, shoes, and wet gear.
X-Dome 2 is designed to keep you protected and comfortable in tough conditions. That starts with the structure of the tent, which is stronger than most ultralight tents due to the larger diameter tubing in key areas, and the premium high strength carbon fiber poles that are stronger for the weight than aluminum. This makes the X-Dome sturdier than comparable tents, plus trekking poles can be optionally added to complete the crossbar into a robust third arch which adds substantial vertical and horizontal strength for snowloads and high winds.
What is often overlooked - yet usually matters more than outright strength - is how liveable the tent is during tough conditions. Here the X-Dome excels with overhanging doorways that keep out falling rain, 100% polyester fabric that is non-sag and fast drying, a fly first pitch that keeps the interior dry during setup, a full doublewall design to separate any condensation, and a fly that extends low to the ground to blocks drafts and rain splatter. No other ultralight freestanding tent has all of these protections.
The X-Dome 2 is also highly spacious so you have room to live when riding out a storm, and the details that matter have been obsessed over - such as taller doorways so you can enter without touching a wet fly and generously sized vestibules for wet gear. It's the shelter you want to have when wet weather rolls in.
Features:
- Optimal Geometry: Our patent pending X-Dome geometry combines our unique rectangular X-Mid floorplan with a freestanding pole structure to enable improved space and protection while making it simpler and lighter.
- Structurally Efficient Pole Set: A single larger tube can be stronger and lighter than multiple smaller tubes, so the X-Dome pole set modifies the classic dual arch design by combining the dual arches together into a single arch across the top of the tent, while also upsizing this "spine" tubing to be about twice the strength, so it offer the strength of a dual arch tent at a lower weight. This pole set also uses premium Easton carbon fiber to further improve the strength and lower the weight.
- Spacious: The X-Dome 2 is a highly spacious 2 person tent, including class leading interior volume and a floor large enough to two wide rectangular pads. Headroom is 3-6" taller than comparable tents with a 43" interior peak height and the shape extends this over a larger portion of the tent, while steep walls provide excellent length and useable width.
- Trekking Pole Supports: Trekking poles can be optionally added to complete the cross bar into an ultra strong extra arch, giving the tent 4-season levels of strength. Uniquely, these trekking pole supports are counter balanced so they directly support the sidewalls from deflection and further increase the vertical and horizontal stability of the tent.
- Non Sag Polyester Fabric: Our tents have pioneered the use of polyester in lightweight tents because polyester doesn't absorb water and sag like nylon, so the shelter dries fast and retains its structural integrity in wet conditions.
- Large Doorway
The doorway is large thanks to the crossbar (which increases the height) and the angled zipper (which widens the opening). This large door provides easy entry and can be enlarged further by opening the smaller side of the door to fully open the side of the tent.
In addition to the generous size, the doorway is fully protected (overhanging) so rain won't fall inside. The smaller door can be secured with a stake, but also anchored by an angled trekking pole.
The X-Dome 2 has dual vestibules that are large, tall and put the main area beside the door instead of blocking it for improved ease of use. The vestibule has a healthy 21" (0.5 m) of depth at the door zipper which widens further to 26" at the end of the tent, giving room for even the largest packs. From inside the tent you can easily access the vestibule through the main door, plus you can open the smaller interior door to directly access the vestibule space.
A full doublewall design with separate fly and inner components avoids potential contact with fly condensation and allows for modular use, including pitching the inner only in fair weather, pitching the fly first to keep the inner tent dry in the rain, and using the fly + poles without the inner as an even lighter shelter (29 oz / 830 g)
The dual adjustable peak vents minimize condensation yet can close during harsh conditions.
The X-Dome has a wide range of optional guyouts including the ability to add dual guylines at each corners as well as more guylines on the hubs and cross bar ends (12 guylines in total). When using the corner guylines, wrap them around the poles for the highest performance.
The simple yet unique design of the X-Dome allows it to pitch naturally in any order. You can pitch the fly first to keep the inner tent dry during setup in the rain, but also pitch the inner first for stargazing on warm summer nights. The tent can be pitched with the two parts pre-connected together (for faster pitching) or separately (so they can be stored apart). However you want to pitch the tent, the X-Dome can do it simply and easily with no extra parts or practice required.
The design is also 100% freestanding including not even needing the vestibules to be staked out. Instead of staking the vestibule you can secure it with an angled trekking pole, or roll it back and still have it sheltered by an awning. Of course you should use some stakes so the tent doesn't blow away, but you can let the conditions determine that instead of the tent requiring you to use certain stakes.
A full coverage fly extends low to the ground to block drafts and rain splatter.
Magnetic toggles allow the fly and interior doors to be closed operated with one hand.
The X-Dome 2 has 4 interior peak pockets including 2 smaller pockets beside the doors (ideal for phones) and 2 larger pockets at the ends (ideal for clothes, stuff sacks).
The X-Dome also has 4 hang loops that allow for a wide range of clotheslines and other setups.
Our seams are factory waterproofed. We use high precision narrow seams and narrow seam taping on most seams, while using high precision narrow seams + a proprietary waterproof seam technology on the seams above the vestibule.
